The most striking works within the capitol are easily the John Steuart Curry murals,
including the dramatic Tragic Prelude, depicting the tumultuous presence of John Brown in
Kansas Territory. Mr. Curry's murals were very controversial and the works stand today without the
author's signature on them. A recent wonder sits atop the capitol. Known as Ad Astra, this
beautiful 22-foot statue depicts a Kansa warrior pointing his arrow to the North Star. 785-296-3966 General hours are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., weekdays. The building

There was a great deal of renovation
going on. As we entered the Senate chamber,
a gentleman kindly explained that we
could not stand in the balcony but could
walk through it. He then told us how
they had found the beautiful copper and
gold leaf ornamentation under layers of
smoke, etc. He was so charming and made
us feel so welcome. It was wonderful! -Sharon T., from Minnesota
