The capitol, completed in 1910, boasts extensive Italian terrazzo tiles in its
flooring, all laid by hand. The 66 Italian artisans who laid the tiles were each
given a blue tile to place within the building as their signature stones; only 55
have ever been found. 605-773-3688 General Hours, Open to the Public: Map to the Capitol Building in Pierre This page was updated in August of 2011 Have you been to this capitol before? What did you think?

Interesting fact is that the artisans who put in the terrazzo floor
each were given a blue tile to put in the floor as their "signature."
Fun to find the tiles while touring around! -The Applenuts

The South Dakota stamp is not monitored by any staff members at the capitol. It
is usually located in the rotunda on the second floor, near the front doors. On
occasion, however, the stamp has been used to vandalize the building. In these
instances, the stamp is sequestered but may be brought out upon asking. If you
DON'T see the stamp in the capitol rotunda, contact Marla at 605-773-3688 and
she will meet you to provide the stamp during your capitol visit.
