The capitol was not paid for in dollars, but in land, with approximately three million acres in the panhandle of the state being transferred to Chicagoans Charles and John Farwell to form the XIT Ranch. The ‘sunset red’ granite that forms the exterior lends the building its distinctive color.

I was In Austin last May. We thought the capitol building was beautiful, but we did not get the chance to tour it. We went to the LBJ Library and Lady Bird Wildflower Center while in town. The Wildflower Center was one of our favorite sites on our extended tour of Presidential Libraries. I'm sure she would love the fact that many people are enjoying and communing with nature at her Center!
