On the grounds is an empty crypt that was originally intended to hold the remains of George Washington and his wife. Around this Washington Monument are six more statues honoring Virginia leaders and the ideals they embodied. First occupied in 1788 and designed by Thomas Jefferson and French architect Charles-Louis Clerisseau, the original central portion of the capitol is modeled on the Maison Carree, an ancient Roman temple in Nimes, France.

General hours are Monday through Saturday from 9-5, Sundays 1-5.

Guided tours Monday - Saturday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., with the last tour at 4 p.m., Sunday 1 p.m. - 5 p.m., with the last tour at 4 p.m.

If you are coming with a group of ten or more, please call ahead to schedule a tour.

The undeground extension of the capitol building offers lunch M-F and a gift shop M-Sat.
